While on the subject I thought I’d mention something we were recently gifted. Normally we’re opposed to anything with a forced structure when it comes to kids’ creative activities, but this blank pop-up book “kit” is really pretty fun. If you don’t know about Mo Willems, you’re missing out. His books are smart, clever and break all the right rules of children’s books. For example, why does the main character have to be a bunny or a mouse? Why not a naked mole rat? He’s had a New York Times Bestseller, received several Caldecott Honors and even won 6 Emmys from his days as a writer and animator for Sesame Street. We love him, and you will too. Get ‘em here.
If you’re looking for some great books to add to your collection, I highly recommend any of these by Laurie Keller. They’re exceptional on every level; well thought out and amazingly clever. I love flipping through them as much as my daughter loves having them read to her. Each time through you’ll find something new to look at and discuss. Andrew Zuckerman has been hard at work filling the world with ridiculously beautiful imagery. His animal photography is simply breathtaking. Check out his book, Creature, available from B&N (a total steal at $40 if you ask me). An awesome gift for anyone, but beyond cool for any kid’s birthday present. I think Andrew knows that too, as he also just released four of these images in puzzle form, available here.
